Black Maternal Health: Equity and Inclusivity Certificate

The United States is considered to be a high income country but for the past decade the USA has been an outlier when maternal mortality rates are examined along with other comparable countries. The expected maternal mortality rate in the USA is less than or equal to ten. However as of 2024 the rate of maternal mortality in the USA is 17.9 per 100,000 births (The WHO). JAMA Network performed a cross sectional study analyzing the data from 2018- 2022 and declared a maternal crisis. How does this crisis affect underserved communities who have experienced a history of less than ethical care? The Black Community has been victimized by these preventable maternal deaths at a rate of 4x as likely than white communities.
This course was created to provide education and advocacy in support of closing gaps in maternity equity. The course takes a look into maternal health as whole, the history of birthing, and the systems that were created for birthing mothers and how they affected the black community, managing health conditions, birth stories, postpartum period, and navigating the systems with support. The course also requires case study reviews and literature excerpt discussions. This explanation is not an all inclusive list of coursework.
This course is recommended for professionals in the community who want to make a difference based on evidence and compassion. The goal of this course to cause those who care for pregnant and birthing families think about the decisions they make while delivering care. As well those who want to advocate for families having healthier perinatal outcomes. The Natal Network extends an olive branch to those who hold the title of nurse, physician, doula, social worker, case manager, and trauma therapist.
This course is available for individuals and groups. The course is offered virtually and in person.
